After Swimming


            After swimming in the cold lake,
            I hang my suit on the railing
            of the porch where a bird wailing
            does its business for goodness' sake…
            
            But presently a garter snake
            will do the damned offender in
            for this unforgivable sin,
            while I watch from behind a wall 
            the traitor swallowed wail and all.
            The suit hangs like a dead fish skin.
